Bad sleep gets most of the attention. Less talked about is what the research shows happens when sleep is consistently good, benefits that go well beyond feeling rested.
Longevity
People who kept to five healthy sleep habits (7-8 hours a night, minimal difficulty falling or staying asleep, no reliance on sleep medication, and feeling well-rested most days) had a life expectancy at age 30 that was 4.7 years longer for men and 2.4 years longer for women than those with poor sleep across those same measures. All-cause mortality was 30% lower.

Cardiovascular health
Using a different four-factor score (sleep duration, insomnia symptoms, snoring, and daytime sleepiness), people with consistently healthy sleep had a 27% lower risk of cardiovascular disease, 25% lower coronary heart disease risk, and 24% lower stroke risk over 10 years of follow-up, compared to those with poor sleep across the same measures.

Memory and learning
Sleep doesn't just prevent forgetting, it actively strengthens what you've learned. In a controlled study, people who slept after learning new material retained it significantly better than people who stayed awake for the same 12-hour stretch. The advantage was specific to consolidating what was already learned, it didn't help people relearn material faster the next day.

Immune function
Sleep affects how well T-cells, the immune cells responsible for finding and clearing infected cells, are able to activate and do their job. In a controlled comparison, that activation was roughly 56% higher after a full night's sleep than after a night of staying awake. It's a small study, so treat the exact number loosely, but the mechanism itself is well-documented.
Weight and body composition
In a randomized trial, adults who extended their sleep by about an hour a night, no diet changes, ate roughly 270 fewer calories a day without trying to. Separately, in a controlled dieting study, people sleeping 8.5 hours a night lost more of their weight as fat, 1.4 kg of fat versus 0.6 kg with 5.5 hours' sleep, and less as muscle, 1.5 kg versus 2.4 kg of fat-free mass lost. Total weight loss was similar either way, what differed was what kind of weight it was.
