Sustain short sleep for a week, and the effects compound. Averaging 5-6 hours a night for seven days made people roughly 4x more likely to develop a cold after being directly exposed to the virus.

Part of why shows up at the cellular level. Sleep affects how well T-cells, the immune cells responsible for finding and clearing infected cells, are able to activate and do their job. In a controlled comparison, that activation was roughly 56% higher after a full night's sleep than after a night of staying awake. It's a small study (10 participants), so it's a mechanism worth knowing about rather than a precise number to rely on, but it lines up with why short sleep and higher infection risk travel together.
A week of short sleep also disrupts testosterone production, a controlled study found a 10-15% drop after just seven nights at 5 hours. That result comes from a small sample (10 men), so it's suggestive rather than conclusive, but the direction is consistent with what's known about sleep and hormone regulation more broadly.

Chronic bad sleep
Keep it up for months or years, and the risk moves from short-term impairment to long-term disease. People who habitually sleep short have a 48% higher risk of coronary heart disease and 15% higher risk of stroke than those who don't.
