Is CBN legal in Slovakia?

Across the EU, CBN is classified as an unauthorised novel food under Regulation (EU) 2015/2283 in the same way as CBD, and no Union list authorisation exists in any member state. Cannabinol has no EFSA safety opinion of its own.

Cannabinol is not scheduled in Slovakia. It appears nowhere in the current annexes to the narcotics act, in any group. Cannabidiol was listed until 2021 and cannabinol never was.

What is scheduled is cannabis material: dry extract, plants, ethanolic tincture and resin of the genus Cannabis, in the strictest group of narcotic substances. All four carry the same exemption for seeds and for varieties of Cannabis sativa listed in the plant variety registration rules, which points to the EU Common Catalogue. A cannabinol-bearing extract of a Catalogue variety therefore falls outside the entries by their own terms. Slovak drug law sets no THC percentage anywhere.

The constraint on a cannabinol supplement is food law. The public health authority states that CBD and other cannabinoids are unauthorised novel foods absent from the Union list and cannot be placed on the market in Slovakia as food or as a food ingredient. Breach is an administrative offence under the Food Act, and official control of food supplements and novel foods sits with the public health authorities.

Cannabinol is not a controlled substance in Slovakia and never has been. That is worth saying because Slovakia was, until 2021, the only EU country that treated CBD as a psychotropic substance, so its schedules repay careful reading. Cannabinol appears in none of them.

What Slovakia schedules is cannabis material, with an exemption for registered hemp varieties, which is what our extract is made from. As everywhere in the EU, cannabinol has not yet been authorised as a novel food, and Slovak enforcement on that point has reached companies established in Slovakia rather than sellers shipping in from elsewhere.

Perspectivas

Slovakia's recent scheduling activity has run in one direction: towards synthetic and semi-synthetic cannabinoids, named individually rather than by generic clause. The 2024 amendment added the hexahydrocannabinol family, tetrahydrocannabidiol and three minor tetrahydrocannabinols, and left both cannabidiol and cannabinol alone. Nothing suggests cannabinol is being considered.

The pressure to watch is enforcement rather than legislation. A June 2026 police warning that products sold as CBD or CBG have been found to contain synthetic cannabinoids will tend to increase sampling of everything sold under a cannabinoid label.
