Is Melatonin legal in Greece?

Situación formal

Melatonin has no EU-harmonised rule in food supplements — every member state sets its own position, and they diverge sharply.

Greece has set a national maximum. By decision of the Greek medicines agency in October 2024, products containing melatonin in a daily dose greater than 1 mg are not acceptable as food supplements and their distribution in the Greek market is prohibited, following a transitional period for existing stock that ended in May 2025.

A 1 mg daily dose is therefore permitted. Melatonin medicines exist separately in Greece under the agency's medicines remit; the supplement route below the threshold is unaffected by that.

Greece caps melatonin in food supplements at 1 mg per daily dose. Above that, a product is not accepted as a supplement and cannot be distributed there - the Greek medicines agency set that rule in October 2024 and has enforced it since, ordering a 3 mg imported sleep supplement off the market in January 2026.

Our dose is 1 mg, which sits inside the Greek limit. We formulate and release-test to that figure rather than aiming at it, so this is one of the few parts of our regulatory picture with no grey area in it at all.

Whether we can ship to Greece is decided by the CBD rules rather than by melatonin.

Perspectivas

Settled since October 2024, and actively policed at the top end rather than in dispute. The Greek medicines agency prohibited a 3 mg imported sleep supplement in January 2026 on precisely this basis, which is the pattern to expect: action against products above the line, not against compliant ones.

There is no sign of Greece moving the figure. If it ever does, the direction of travel across Europe has been downward rather than upward, so that is the change worth watching.

EOF prohibits the distribution of SWANSON Sleep Essentials, 60 capsules at 3 mg melatonin per capsule with a recommended dose of one capsule daily, manufactured by Swanson Health Products in the United States and distributed from Poland, on the ground that it contains melatonin in a quantity greater than the permitted limit of 1 mg per day.
